Second-Degree Atrioventricular (AV) Block is a type of heart block where some of the electrical signals from the upper chambers (atria) fail to reach the lower chambers (ventricles), causing missed heartbeats and irregular rhythms. šŸ«€ Types of Second-Degree AV Block: šŸ”¹ Mobitz Type 1 (Wenckebach): - The signal delay gradually increases until one beat is completely blocked - Usually benign and temporary - Common in athletes or during sleep šŸ”¹ Mobitz Type 2: - Sudden, unpredictable dropping of beats without prior delay - More serious and can progress to complete heart block - Often needs a pacemaker šŸ” Causes Can Include: - Coronary artery disease or heart attack - Myocarditis or cardiomyopathy - Electrolyte imbalances - Certain medications (beta-blockers, digoxin) - Aging of the conduction system šŸ“‰ Symptoms (may vary): - Dizziness or light-headedness - Fainting (syncope) - Fatigue - Palpitations - Shortness of breath
