Second-Degree Atrioventricular (AV) Block is a type of heart block where some of the electrical signals from the upper chambers (atria) fail to reach the lower chambers (ventricles), causing missed heartbeats and irregular rhythms. š« Types of Second-Degree AV Block: š¹ Mobitz Type 1 (Wenckebach): - The signal delay gradually increases until one beat is completely blocked - Usually benign and temporary - Common in athletes or during sleep š¹ Mobitz Type 2: - Sudden, unpredictable dropping of beats without prior delay - More serious and can progress to complete heart block - Often needs a pacemaker š Causes Can Include: - Coronary artery disease or heart attack - Myocarditis or cardiomyopathy - Electrolyte imbalances - Certain medications (beta-blockers, digoxin) - Aging of the conduction system š Symptoms (may vary): - Dizziness or light-headedness - Fainting (syncope) - Fatigue - Palpitations - Shortness of breath
